When is Physiotherapy right for children?

It may be surprising to know that there are many childhood conditions that benefit from Physiotherapy. Here are just a few reasons for which you may want to consider paying a visit to a physiotherapist with your child:

Sports injuries – set your child up for success.  Going back to their sport prematurely increases the risk of re-injury.  A common misconception is that if the pain is gone that the injury has fully recovered.  Your physiotherapist can ensure that the injury is fully healed and that your child is clear to return to their activity.

Following cast withdrawal – Weeks of immobilization causes weakened muscles, which can prevent children from partaking in regular activity.  Your physiotherapist can work with your child to rebuild muscle strength and regain mobility.

Following an orthopedic surgery – Post surgery, many children experience decreased motor control if nerves or muscles are impacted during surgery.  Post-surgery pain is also a deterrent for many children to return to activity, increasing the risk of losing mobility.  Your physiotherapist can work with your child to rebuild muscle strength and thus increase mobility and motor control.

Growing Pains – Sometimes bones grow faster than the muscles and tissue surrounding them.  This causes tension in the child’s body when the soft tissue tries to keep up.  Children feel this pain near their joints where the muscles insert into the bones.  Your physiotherapist can work with your child to manage this type of discomfort.

Gait changes – If you notice your child’s walking pattern has changed, it may be a sign of pain or neuro-musculoskeletal issues.  Your physiotherapist will be able to analyse your child’s gait to determine the root cause of the change.   They can then provide exercise prescriptions to help correct any abnormal patterns and decrease any pain your child may be experiencing.
