How to Recognize Abdominal Separation

Abdominal Separation is a fairly common condition. It mainly affects pregnant or postpartum women. It is a result of the separation of the rectus abdominis muscle into right and left halves. As the uterus expands, the rectus abdominis muscles stretch, causing the separation.

Women that are more susceptible to develop diastasis recti, are:

  1. Usually over the age of 35
  2. Have had a child with a higher than usual birth weight
  3. Have had a multiple birth pregnancy, and/or multiple pregnancies.
  4. Additional causes include excessive abdominal exercises after the first trimester of pregnancy.
