How do Foam Rollers Work?

By now you have likely heard all about foam rolling, but do you know WHY foam rolling works? How exactly does it help alleviate muscle strain and aid recovery after activity? What about rolling before activity?

Today on the blog, we are chatting all things foam rolling!

How does it work?

Using a foam roller involves rolling or holding a muscle or trigger point on the roller and using your body weight to apply pressure. The roller itself is typically quite dense creating a sturdy force onto which you can extend muscle pressure. The pressure from the roller will relax nerves of tense muscles and surrounding facial tissue causing you to feel better. In fact, the pressure is causing tiny micro-adhesions or knots in your muscles caused by working out and everyday stress to loosen, easing away pain and tightness.

When should I do it?

There are specific techniques you can use to target each muscle group, and it is good practice to add a roller routine to your post activity stretching whenever possible. This week, for Movement Monday, we shared a great 15 minute routine from Relentless Fitness, you can find it here.

What is less commonly discussed are the benefits of rolling before activity. Rolling before you workout or start your day will increase circulation from the self massage and light activity. Increased circulation leads to healthier heart function, better oxygen levels throughout the body and overall better health.
