The Role of Physio in Neuro-Rehabiltation

Neuro-rehabilitation is a treatment area that focuses on adult and pediatric brain injuries. These include post-concussive syndrome, stroke, spinal cord injury, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological conditions.

Many of these neurological conditions have serious physical implications. Typically this includes reduced mobility, poor balance and overall weakness. Decreased physical function has also been linked to reduced heart and lung function, fatigue, falls, and often, social isolation.

Physiotherapy, as part of a neuro-rehab program, helps to improve balance, coordination, strength, cardiovascular function, flexibility and overall mood and outlook.

A neuro-rehabilitation program’s main focus is to increase physical function and independence. Each treatment program being specifically customized based on a patient’s range of mobility and condition.

To treat neurological conditions, a therapist may assess and treat gait patterns, balance issues, dizziness/vestibular issues, as well as posture mal-alignment.  Typically, customized exercise program is developed for each patient. Treatment programs range from standard exercises to yoga and Myofascial Release-based exercise programs.

Neurological physiotherapy can help to improve balance and coordination including walking and balance while sitting. It can promote independence in the form of walking, chair transfer and sitting. It can improve muscle strength and tone, correct compensatory movement patterns and enhance overall function.
