Treating chronic pain with aquatic therapy

Chronic pain, or pain that lasts for longer than six months, is often characterized as a debilitating condition. Many sufferers of chronic pain have trouble with everyday activities and are often unable to work or attend social outings. One of the most effective treatments for chronic pain is aquatic therapy.

Aquatic therapy for chronic pain

Nearly 80% of your body weight is reduced when you are submerged to the chest. This state allows a patient to retrain muscles and joints with ease. When in the water, a patient’s body is able to heal faster. Exercise in the water is often easier for those who suffer from chronic pain and the effect of the water temperature on the skin acts as a natural pain suppressant. The resistance ensures that the movement is challenging enough to have impact and the reduced body weight allows the patient to focus on their mobility and strength.

Chronic pain can occur in any number of areas, with the most common afflictions being arthritis or localized back pain. Aquatic therapy has a major impact on such chronic conditions. Using an underwater treadmill or water belt allows patients to return to walking as a source of consistent movement.

Types of chronic pain treated with aquatic therapy

Relieving pain from back strains or disc issues becomes much easier when the body weight is taken out of the equation. The mild resistance offers a gradual approach to strength building.

Other strains and sprains benefit from the slow repetitive movements offered by aquatic therapy. Often allowing patients to regain movements that may have been unattainable as a result of their injury. Underwater walking is a proven way to increase a patient’s range of motion, decrease their pain and allow them to regain strength and mobility.
